Theft of Mayoral Chains

Posted on 9th February 2026

With a very recent high-profile organised theft of Civic Regalia, it’s a timely reminder to our members to ensure the following:

  • Ensure your security arrangements are robust, have been tested and the response you would expect to receive from an alarm activation will actually happen.
  • Ensure you have a risk assessment for the public display of Civic Regalia, and such cabinets and display cases, have an appropriate level of security applied to them.
  • Think critically about where your civic regalia is physically displayed to the public
  • Ensure your insurance policies are current and adequate for the value of your civic regalia

If you are in any doubt, aire on the side of caution, particularly with Civic Chains and Maces, whilst it’s great to display them to the wider public, the balance between civic accessibility and security should always favour the security of such items.

This recent theft isn’t an isolated incident; there have been several equally high-profile thefts across the UK over recent years.

Stay vigilant and report anything out of the ordinary
