Ceremonial Response to Death

Official Sensitive

Considerable work has been undertaken to produce a new set of Guidance Notes to replace the sixth edition of "Marking the Death of a Senior National Figure" That work is now complete.

The title has been changed and please follow this link to access the document:

Guidance Notes on a Ceremonial Response to Death

It should be read alongside the guidance for local authorities which the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is planning to publish today.

The Guidance Notes are classified "Official - Sensitive". Please keep this in mind and share the contents only on a "need to know" basis.

Much of the Guidance remains unchanged. Perhaps the most significant development is around timings on the passing of the Monarch, set out in Section 2 on page 7. The changes made should overcome the uncertainty experienced in the past.

As with its predecessor, publication of this document marks the start of an evolutionary process. This edition picks up many of the lessons learnt in September 2022, but inevitably changes will be made over the coming years, as thinking develops.; New editions will be published from time to time.
