Main Duties

To manage all aspects of the Civic Office in an efficient and friendly manner, to enable the Lord Mayor, Sheriff and Lady Mayoress.

To plan the work of the Civic Team so that it supports and promotes local groups, organisations and the district as a whole. This includes managing the arrangements for civic visits and hosted events throughout the district.

To manage, coordinate and deliver civic events on behalf of the council. This includes managing the budget, sourcing materials, collaboration with other parties and on-site event management.

To promote the role of the Lord Mayor, Sheriff and civic team to ensure local residents and organisations are aware of the service they provide.

To advise on civic practices, ceremonial procedure and protocol, and ensure that they are followed.

To maintain good working relationships both internally and externally, to reflect the good reputation of the Civic Team and the City Council.

Essential Requirements

The Lord Mayor, Sheriff and Civic Team play a big part in community life in Canterbury district, where they are involved in a variety of historical, ceremonial and charitable activities. The Civic Manager is responsible managing the office that makes all this happen. This is a unique opportunity to make your mark in a high profile office. We are looking for someone with energy and enthusiasm who can plan, prioritise and organise a varied workload, supporting the civic team.

This is a busy office. The civic team attend over 500 events each year and the Civic Manager is instrumental in making sure that their diary is properly coordinated so that every day runs smoothly and efficiently. You will need to demonstrate sound judgment, a good eye for detail and problem solving skills to deal with the unexpected. You will also be able to deal confidently with VIP guests, councillors and senior managers across a range of organisations, demonstrating strong networking and communication skills. We also need someone with strong management skills, who can manage budgets, has good IT skills, shows political awareness and demonstrable experience of managing a team.
